ASPHALT SHINGLES
An asphalt shingle is a roof shingle that uses asphalt for waterproofing.
It is one of the most widely used roofing covers in North America because it has a relatively inexpensive up-front cost and is pretty easy to install.
Asphalt shingles can be made using either organic material or fiberglass.
Both are made similarly, with an asphalt-saturated base covered on either side.
The exposed surface is impregnated with ceramic granules, and the under-side is treated with sand talc or mica to prevent shingles from sticking to one another before use.
An additive named styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), sometimes called modified or rubberized asphalt, can be added to the asphalt mixture to make shingles more pliable and resistant to thermal cracking and hail impact.
Why Asphalt Shingles
The top surface granules block ultra-violet light, which causes the shingles to deteriorate, providing color and physical protection to the asphalt core.
Lighter shades are preferred in sunny climates for their heat reflectivity, darker ones in cooler areas for their heat absorption.
Self-sealing strips are standard on the underside of shingles to provide resistance to lifting in high winds.
Most insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners for using impact-rated shingles such as asphalt ones.
Asphalt shingles offer a strong potential for recovery and recycling, with uses in hot mix asphalt (HMA), cold asphalt patching, and as a fuel in cement kilns.
